How did I not discover this comforting, wonderful drink sooner? It combines all that is good about creamy steamed milk and subtle, spiced cookie flavours.
Ingredients:
1 cup milk
A tiny pinch of allspice and cinnamon
Method:
1. Gently warm milk in a small saucepan over medium-low to medium heat. (Don't bring it to boil!)
2. When milk is thoroughly hot (after it starts developing a thin skin over its surface), whisk milk until frothy.
3. Pour into serving mug.
4. Scatter spices on top (like ashes on the surf!). (Yes, I had to try to fit that in.)
5. Stir. Serve.
Great for cold, cold days.

Date: 2009-04-10 06:20 am (UTC)I'm afraid I don't know any good phrasebooks, but wikipedia actually has a list of very useful simple phrases under its Bahasa Malaysia page: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bahasa_Malaysia#Simple_phrases_in_Malay
Malaysians like it when foreigners speak their language, even if it's just to thank them for something. (Huge cliche, I know, but even I fall for it.) :)
Generally speaking, most Malaysians are at least partially bilingual and can speak some English. We used to be an ex-British colony, plus, English is still a mandatory second language taught in schools. There's enough English media playing on the local channels that you won't find it hard to encounter an English speaker. When in doubt, look for a younger person! Kulim's a little out the way, I admit, but oh, boy! An adventure!
